French Fried!

Wed Jan 30, 2008, 1:39 PM
Recently I was looking at the Pepper Project and I happened upon a familiar image. By just doing some simple research I was able to spot a forgery. Knowing how sensitive most artists are about people being direct with them, I tried to be 'nice', but at the same time alert the copy-cat that he had broken a rule of the project, and let him correct it. He [link] desided not to, and then tried to bad mouth me elsewhere. So, I gave him this:

First off let me say that I was trying to be 'nice', like so manyon this site have suggested that I should be, when I said that it 'looked' like Navis from Sillage. I was trying to give you an opportunity to confess to what you had done. I did not mean it as a compliment in any way, shape, or form, but as a warning. So, since you still can't do the right thing, let us count the ways that you ripped-off Mr. Buchet's character and called it your own.
1. The pose IS the same! you only 'mirror'ed it. You know, that little feature on most graphics programs that let you take an image and flip it, as if looking at it in a mirror.
2. The point of view, or perspective, is the same.
3. The outfit is the same, except for the color, and a few less accessories.
4. The highlights are the same.
5. The hair is in the same style, the parting of the hair is the same, except that you added an extention off to one side.
6. The eyes and smile are the same.
7. The hand and feet placement is the same, as well as the rest of the body.
8. The breast size is the exact same.
I could go on, but anyone with at least one good eye, let alone two, can tell what you have done. It doesn't matter what ';process' ( whether it be tracing paper, computer, lighttable, projector, or grid.) that you used. The point is that you used someone else's character/creation, and tried to pass it off as your own. Police usually don't care how you robbed the bank, just that you did it, for whatever reason. Look in the fan-art section of this site and you will find tons of it, whether good or bad. The major difference is that those artists don't claim the characters as their own, thus the fan-art title to the section. I find it ridiculous that you are a French male artist and try to make the claim that you had never seen the Navis image that I provided [link] ! It's just about everywhere there is an internet site that even meantions Navi, Sillage, or Phillip Buchet! Did you think people would be that stupid?! What you've done is the equivelent of taking Caravaggio's portrait of Antonio Martelli [link] , replaced the sword with a lightsaber, and put it into an Obi-won Project, and call it your own. Of course you'd have to throw in a little reversed-engineered 'sketched' to show the nay-sayers when they saw the falsehood of it, and then claim to have never seen the Caravaggio painting!
It's one thing to copy someone else's work, to try to figure out how they did it, and quite another to claim it as your own character, idea, composition, ect. I don't know how you thought you'd get away with it, especially when so many artist on this site rail against anyone stealing their work and calling it their own. Not that long ago a group of artist on this site were complaining about some other site for not protecting their rights, when others were blatantly taking their art off of DA and putting it one another as their own. Besides which the rules of the project clearly state: "The person submitting should be the artist or have written permission from the copyright holder of the work. You may include other characters of your own creation but please do not include any characters in the artwork that you do not own. Unfortunately it means you can't include Pepper dancing with Naruto or racing Sonic the Hedgehog etc. (unless of course you have permission from the copyright owners of Naruto- which would be really cool btw!) Please do not include backgrounds or additional image elements in your submission that you do not own or have permission to use in published artwork. This includes stock photography elements, fonts, someone else's art." No where do you see Mr. Buchet's permission on your submission.
As for the title I've given myself, if you really have taken the time to read my journals here, you would know why. But I'll go beyond that reason and give you another. I AM a master at my chosen technique. It's hard to find artists in the U.S. that attempt pointillism, much less have have mastered it. Most of those that have mastered it I know by name, and keep in touch with on a regular basis. If you don't like my work, that's fine, I could care less. You are as free to comment on it as anyone else on this site, if you wish. Though I am a master of pointillism, my opinion on just about anything is worth the same as anyone else, including yours. However, I would be blind to not see the wrong that you have committed, as would anyone else. Having seen that blatant forgery for what it is, I would feel as though I were an accomplice if I did not point it out, especially to those running the Pepper Project, which I have already done. It is up to them what they are going to do or not do withyour flagrent copyright infringement. Next time think before you try this again, I'm not the only one watching, or at least try to master forgeries.
And to your friend Ave606 I would add that I'm not a DA art director, though lately I've been feeling as though I'm DA's version of Simon Cowell only a bit nicer, but you don't have to submit anything to the project in order to comment on it, or anything else on this site, for that matter. I've check your site, too, so you know and I can't really find anything interesting and/or important, either. And as for the title that you have given yourself, what kind of title is 'FoxNatural' for an artist who can't even pull off a good copy of someone else's work? You are no MasterOfForgery that is for sure!

Oops! Fox did not like the fact I pointed out his crime, maybe that's why he left this in my notes; "i'll try to be gentle don't ever post again in my galery or any part of my work. i saw your website and your gal. you don't have any ability to judge any part of work. you are far away to be a professional, and your opinion is really really uninteresting. so i repeat it again : don't ever post again on my work" If you are going to threaten people why not do it out in the open, where everyone can see it? Or did I lose something in the translation? Looks like you are not a MasterOfTyping, either ....

Well, he still won't come clean, but at least he is working his way there. Here is FoxNatural's reply in his journal:
* Mood: Angsty
hum... as you know, i have some trouble with someone saying that i copyied my PepperProject's drawing.
well, i'm someone curious, so i looked at what he was saying, and i don't know how but it's true that my character as the same pose than the pic that he showed.
maybe i saw it times ago and it stay in my subconscious, or something like that i don't know...
anyway, that's really a strange story, even me i'm... uncomprehending
i think i'm gonna do another submission, because this one is really close and i don't want to be called a thief

I made a comment to that post, just saying best to air on the side of caution, I know people can sometimes get their backs up immediately when told that they've copied something, whether or not they did. If you handled yourself kindly and without judgement that's all that matters. :)

hams Mom, who would wear a yam?!?!?

that's right pineapple, you too sweet to spell!
:iconmasterofpointillism:
At the start I did, but the more he tried to wiggle out of it I felt the need to smack him down. The group running the project are going to take it into account when selecting, but are not going to confront him about it, at least not publicly. So I felt the need to.

yeah, from what I've read the person is redoing a new one, which is a good idea, whether guilty or not, cause if they're not then it will reflect bad on them, and if they are then they're gonna have it come back at them.
