During this holiday season I'd like to discuss one of the best things about the United States of America; free speech. As a DA artist I have never blocked anyone from speaking their mind, or lack there of, at any time or hidden their comments. On the two groups that I run;
artistsagainstgw-cc.deviantart… and
saveduhignorant.deviantart.com… I am a benevolent dictator for one major reason: that no one can be blocked or their comments hidden. Too often a lot of people here on this site can't handle it when someone is pointing out things they don't want seen, too many 'artist's are too easily 'offended' and block others from their pages, and there is a lot of people that say they are for free speech, but only mean theirs. On at least one occasion in one of my groups a member wanted me to block another artist from commenting on our page. This I hope I will never have to do. If you can't stand the heat get your ass out of the kitchen. If you can't defend yourself or your actions and/or opinions, then don't go around making comments.
What I do find very funny is a lot of these trolling blocktards get 'offended' when others block them from commenting on their work, but are very quick to block and hide comments of others when they can't win an argument:
masterofpointillism.deviantart… is just one example. Another thing that I find humorous is when people with no artistic skill use this site as their own personal trolling bridge to promote politically-correct language or just being stupid, but whine when the site makes it easier for them to be blocked by others that think their comments are 'inappropriate' or just plain annoying:
avskyggene.deviantart.com/jour… . It never occurred to them that that the very weapons that they threw at others might be used against them. It is very sad that in this country if you call a duck a duck that you are punished for it:
www.breitbart.tv/msnbcs-mark-h… ! Need anyone be reminded that Jesse Jackson said he wanted to castrate Obama, but he didn't get as much uproar as the poor fellow that thought he was acting like a Wiener. What a double standard.
Even DA itself gets into the act of blocking and shutting down people, however it must be noted that it is their private site so they can do with it as they please, who have a different point of view or seek to speak their own truth. I've had a running forum thread that has been going for three years now
comments.deviantart.com/18/126… but some Admin decided to 'Necro' it. I guess I got a little too close to the truth for them ...
But despite DA's ability to block 'artists' and their 'work', there are some that have found ways of getting around these roadblocks. The one that I'm most familiar with is
shorthand-hero.deviantart.com/ who has been repeatedly banned from DA, but manages to keep his 'art' on this site and has come back under several other names, the most recent being:
limbaugh-is2liberal.deviantart… . He belongs to a group that tries to go around and "Intimidate with intellect", but they mostly end up congratulating themselves with attempting to beat up artists with religious beliefs. Their 'targets' are mostly Christians for some reason (too chicken-shit to attack Muslims, I guess), and they try to use 'Logic' to show these 'poor souls' that the things that they believe in are imaginary and not real. Trying to use Logic to dispel a belief is quite laughable. Even skeptic Carl Sagan knew that trying to disprove most religious beliefs was almost impossible, and yet these yahoos think that they not only can do it, but that they should. They can't even manage to follow the three simple rules that they have for their group;
logicsquad.deviantart.com/ let alone convince anyone that what they believe is false. But as I tell many people when they suggest banning, blocking, or hiding others comments is that I'd rather follow Woodrow Wilson's advice on free speech: "I have always been among those who believe that the greatest freedom of speech was the greatest safety, because if a man is a fool the best thing to do is to encourage him to advertise the fact by speaking."
Skeptic Carl Sagan asked the Dalai Lama what would he do if a fundamental tenet of his religion (reincarnation) were definitively disproved by science. The Dalai Lama answered; "if science can disprove reincarnation, Tibetan Buddhism would abandon reincarnation... but it's going to be mighty hard to disprove reincarnation."
